Version: (using KDE 4.3.4) OS: Linux Installed from: Fedora RPMs I'd like to have an option to set emacs key-bindings for basic editing and navigation on the command line and page. Examples are Ctrl-a, Ctrl-b, Ctrl-e, Ctrl-f, Ctrl-p for beginning of line, back one character, end of line, forward one character, previous line, etc. I'd like this in all relevant KDE applications, and even all running applications if possible. Something similar was available in KDE-3.5.
Sorry, I meant to submit this as a "Wishlist - Feature/Change request", not a "Bug report".
Seconded!

We've had a few requests for this over the years.
I don't understand. What's missing from the current implementation? You can rebind the common shortcuts in the KCM. Our UI allows QKeySequences (i.e the combos), and that transfers all the way through the QPT into the shortcut events.

I made this request for emacs key-bindings on 2010-02-05 (over 10 years ago :-)). If I remember correctly, I did so because, between KDE updates, a single setting which gave the option to use emacs bindings throughout the desktop, disappeared. I'm still using KDE and I still don't know how to set emacs key bindings throughout the desktop. By the way, I'm a user, not a developer, so a simple way to switch to emacs key-bindings throughout KDE would be very nice (like there used to be back before 2010).
Created attachment 132925 [details] test emacs keys Just a simple emacs keys test. This is not perfect. It has a few keys like C-a, C-e, C-k, C-f, C-b etc.
I think this is summed up well in https://www.spinics.net/linux/fedora/fedora-users/msg476874.html It is possible to edit ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini and add, inside the [Settings] section, gtk-key-theme-name = Emacs and this provides emacs keys for Firefox. For KDE you need to redefine each key sequence. Beforehand, there was an "emacs" option. I think the request here is for a provided "emacs" option as there used to be. The justification is that many Linux users and KDE users live in emacs, can fix Firefox with one line but it is hard work to change all key shortcuts for the whole of KDE. Systems settings->shortcuts->standard shortcuts could have a "load emacs keys". This would bring back the removed functionality that we miss. The same is true for individual apps like Kate. Kate has a Settings->Configure Keyboard Shortcuts->Manage Schemes but the only choice is Default. A provided Emacs would be welcome.
