Version: (using Devel) Installed from: Compiled sources With KWin's recent new feature of grouping windows in tabs, it suddenly started to bother me, that for the 6 windows I tabbed together with KWin, I still had 6 separate entries in taskbar. Therefore I propose, that Task Manager add a new grouping option: "Observe Kwin". When windows are tabbed via KWin, their Task Manager entries should automatically group too. Additionally, when windows are grouped by the user in the taskbar, they should be tabbed together.
I surely agree! I don''t think it makes much sense to have three windows on the desktop but 5 taskbar buttons...
I also agree. It's the single thing that keeps me from using that feature. To show it as a group would be the perfect option, but showing only one entry in the taskbar which changes depending on the window selected on the group, would also be nice.

One thing I noticed is that KWin's PREVIEW feature shows only grouped windows. I agree that both task manager and alt-tabbing should only show groups, or at least have the option to show only grouped windows.
I completely agree with this, I think that when you group windows together the taskbar items should be grouped somehow too. I am running KDE 4.7 and it seems strange that grouped windows are only shown as grouped in KWIN and nowhere else.
We'll probably see it in Frameworks 5: https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/103101/
Created attachment 75178 [details] grouped windows = single taskbar entry mockup What would make the most sense to me would be if windows grouped by kwin would fold into a single taskbar entry, not just a group (see attached mockup). When you are using any application with tabs (browser, file manager), you don't expect a separate taskbar entry for each tab within the program, right? That would quickly become very hard to manage. When I use kwin grouping, my mind thinks of the grouped applications as a single, tabbed window, and it is confusing to me when the taskbar doesn't reflect that thinking.
Comment on attachment 75178 [details] grouped windows = single taskbar entry mockup It looks very nice :-) How would it look, when I would have tens of tabbed/grouped windows? There should be only few of them (recent ones) on the taskbar (IMHO 2-3 is maximum, more will lead to too wide button or too short text). I also think, that both variants make sense for some situations and the behaviour should be selected by the user – If I have e.g. too much tabs in web browser, I use drop down button to select them – so If the windows/panels are grouped by kwin, I would like to select them by clicking on taskbar item and selecting particular panel from the list. On the other hand, It I have only few grouped windows, this is not necessary and I would just click on the tab.
That's a good question. A few possible solutions: 1. Rather than trying to display all the entries in a group, have the taskbar text based on the first of the grouped applications (leftmost tab). For example, if you tab-drag Kwrite to an existing Dolphin window, the taskbar entry would display as: "Dolphin (group)" or "Group: Dolphin". Hovering the mouse over the taskbar entry would list all of the applications included in the group. 2. Continue to truncate the taskbar entry text as more applications are added to the group until only icons show. 3. Allow the group button to be wider than other buttons. I personally think that #1 would be the best solution. Solution #2 would be confusing and create information overload, and #3 wouldn't help with a large number of windows in a group.
I should add that #1 would also be the easiest to implement.
I agree with #1. And for 2-3 windows in group, it is elegant to see both/all as shown an mockup. And maybe the group name should reflect the active tab – not only the first one.
I agree with your suggestions.

Hello! This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable. Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging Thanks for your understanding!
