Version: (using Devel) Installed from: Compiled sources KDE 4.3.95, Ubuntu 10.4 Alpha 2+. I've been switching between Gnome and KDE very frequently while testing different aspects of the upcoming Ubuntu 10.4, and I've noticed great differences in the time it takes to exit KDE and Gnome, respectively: Gnome shuts down almost instantaneously (at most 1 second), whereas shutting down KDE takes at least 6 seconds on my fastest test machine. And this is with no open applications; if I increase the number of open applications, KDE's shutdown time goes up even more. The long wait is enough to sometimes make me wonder whether KDE somehow didn't register my shutdown request at all.
Are you really talking about shutdown or just showing up of the logout dialog?
> Are you really talking about shutdown or just showing up of the logout dialog? The logout dialog shows up immediately, and then it takes several seconds after I have confirmed the logout till anything visible happens.
And it is not, by any chance, simply waiting for the logout sound to finish?
> And it is not, by any chance, simply waiting for the logout sound to finish? I can't stand that sound, so I have turned it off. But I will check.
Having turned on the sound notifications on my slower test machine, I find that the shutdown process seems to stand still while the tune is playing, and then my windows are closed. These are my immediate thoughts: - Can it be that the tune is being played even though I have turned off sound notifications? - Can it be that the playing of the tune and the shutting down of the open windows is not done in parallel?
I just installed KDE 4.3.95 on my desktop machine running openSUSE 11.2, and I don't get any shutdown delay if I turn off sound notifications: shutdown is almost instantaneous. I'm beginning to suspect this is a Ubuntu issue, but let's keep it open for a while.
Created attachment 40358 [details] patch to disable logout-sound per default Lubos: what do you think? commit?
FYI: KDE 4.5 will have a much shorter logout song. What still could be done; * try to play the logout song earlier * do not wait till the sound finished but already start shutdown
Does this problem still happen?
Waiting for feedback.
Sorry, I run KDE very seldom these days, and I don't have access to a recent version, so I can't tell.
