I did extensively on a daily basis the silence or activity notifications for the following:

  - be notified when a compilation finishes
  - be notified when a server finishes a reboot
  - be notified when a new log line appears
  - be notified then a sniffed packet is captured
  - etc...

I also used the "send to all sessions" quite a lot to perform simple tasks on groups of servers.

I think for multitasking oriented people those were great features and personally they're the features I miss the most in KDE4.

I think those features are all available in recent version.
