This problem will most likely not be fixed (unless you or somebody else contribute a patch). The autoconf/automake build system will get dropped in the next major release. I'm personally not sure what the configure options do, but can you try if you can do the equivalent with the CMake build system?
I'll try to correct and send a patch. Another try I'll do is to check if /libauto will be created when using the "auto" value. I've never used the CMake build system but it is my intention to study it, so i think i could do the equivalent sooner or later. Let you know
