What I was doing when the application crashed:
The error is absolutely consistent:

I open kmail, 
then I right-click on the specific folder, then clicking "compress"
and kmail crashes.

THis does not happen with the other folders.
The only special thing I can think of about this folder is,
that immediately before the error first occurred, 
I had deleted about 1200 messages from the folder,
leaving about 440 messages.
