Description de Bue 2009-12-28 15:11:33 UTC
Version: Dolphin 1.3 (using KDE 4.3.4)
Compiler: gcc version 4.4.2 (Debian 4.4.2-7)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

Very very slow file copy from DL DVD to HD.

It takes at least 60 minutes to _show_ all 1939 .jpg-files (3-6 MB each, 7.4GB in total) on a 8GB Dual Layer DVD in Dolphin and a few more hours to copy them to the HD. It took 3 hours to copy 1300 files using Konsole and cp /media/cdrom/* /home/user/photo/

Rebooting into pure console without X or KDE copied everything at full speed, using cp /media/cdrom/* /home/user/photo/

There is some serious overhead in X and/or KDE here. I am using KDE 4.3.4.

Thanks for the report, but we'd please need some additional information:
- Did you enable "Previews" when going into the folder containing the 1939 .jpg files?
- If this is the case: Did it take 60 minutes until all previews have been generated or 60 minutes until any file has been shown at all?
- Did you enable Nepomuk (systemsettings -> Advanced -> Desktop Search)?
- Did you enable the Information Panel in Dolphin?
- How did you copy all the files? Did you a "Select all" and dropped them to the destination folder?

Sorry for so many questions, but there might be a lot of root causes here...

- Did you enable "Previews" when going into the folder containing the 1939 .jpg
files?

No, I used "Detailed"

- If this is the case: Did it take 60 minutes until all previews have been
generated or 60 minutes until any file has been shown at all?

See above.

- Did you enable Nepomuk (systemsettings -> Advanced -> Desktop Search)?

No, I haven't enabled it. But, it says that "strigi failed to initilize, most likely due to an installation problem". Hmmm.

- Did you enable the Information Panel in Dolphin?

Don't remember. I turn it on and off.

- How did you copy all the files? Did you a "Select all" and dropped them to
the destination folder?

Ctrl-A and wait until all are marked. Then I move them, using the mouse, to the correct folder using the tree view to the left. I sometimes have both the Information panel and the Tree view open at the same time.

Thanks for your update, but now I'm quite clueless about the root cause. My initial guess was that it was related to previews (BTW: it is possible to enable previews in the details view too, but you said you've turned it off, so it cannot be the root cause). Beside the time it takes for copying, I'm mostly wondering that it takes one hour to list 1939 files... Can you reproduce the issue with listing the 1939 files? Do the file names all end with .jpg or .JPG?

Can you reproduce this bug with the newest version of Dolphin?
If not, I'll close this bug.

No response -> closing. If you can still reproduce this behavior with the newest version of Dolphin, please reopen this bug.
