Description skierpage 2009-12-28 09:19:05 UTC
Application that crashed: systemsettings
Version of the application: 1.0
KDE Version: 4.3.2 (KDE 4.3.2)
Qt Version: 4.5.2
Operating System: Linux 2.6.31-17-generic x86_64
Distribution: Ubuntu 9.10

What I was doing when the application crashed:
Audio for non-KDE apps like vlc and Flash-plugin stopped working (but KDE sounds and Amarok work fine), so I tried the *great* Test button in System Settings > Multimedia > Device Preference > Audio Output > Music. I selected my sound card and clicked Test (I heard sound, this is my default), then "Playback/recording through the PulseAudio sound server" (I heard nothing), then while the Test button was still depressed I selected "PulseAudio" and clicked Test again. A few seconds later System Settings crashed. Just now I tried to reproduce using the top-level output category and it worked, then I tried with the "Music" subtree item selected and System Settings hung when I chose PulseAudio. I was messing around with pactl and aplay and all kinds of other command-line junk, maybe doing that affected this.

By the way, I fixed my audio problems in non-KDE apps by removing pulseaudio and pulseaudio-utils in KPackageKit. (There was no evidence of a PulseAudio install in /var/log/dpkg.log* at all, it might have got installed when I tried to run the Sugar-jhbuild development environment.) So steps to reproduce this bug might require installing pulseaudio "outside" KDE/Ubuntu.
