Description JR 2009-12-12 15:00:55 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.4)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Currently (4.3.4) there exists no plasma widget for placing static text on the desktop.

The Notes widget is useful for creating notes whose content you're likely to add to or change, in a "remember the milk" fashion. If you want to place a static label on the desktop (like "Activity 1", "Workstation 5", "KDE 4" for screenshots and screencasts, ...) it is ill suited, but it sort of "works".

* Even when widgets are locked its content may be changed
* Even when widgets are locked the formatting icon is displayed
* It cannot be made completely transparent (merely translucent)
* No additional text effects like glow (or outline) to make the text more readable (if plasma/Qt has easy support for this to begin with)

Alternatively the Notes plugin could be modified to cover for these use cases, but that would mean adding complexity to make it cover an area of use that's not really the same as "keeping notes".

This doesn't sound like it should take a whole lot of work if one simply gutted/forked the Notes plugin and tweaked it a bit to be more of a label and less of a note.

Please consider it.

In resume, you want a transparent label which when locked the text cannot be changed. No icons on it.
Use: labelling your desktops and/or activities

This could make an interesting junior task for anyone wanting to learn Plasma applet programming.

Hello!

This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
