Description Tyler Burton 2009-12-02 04:53:45 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.3)
Installed from: Fedora RPMs

When you change the default browser to something other than Konqueror it does not automatically re-assign all of the file associations. For example *.htm, *.html, etc. still remain linked to Konqueror. These should be re-assigned to the new default browser if possible.

While this can be fixed through Dolphin's Open With menu it is still a bit of an annoyance.

This is a usability problem.

It is unclear to many users that this setting does not change file associations for HTML files. Users expect that when they change their default web browser that the HTML file types will go with it. To a large extent it makes sense. HTML files are typically viewed with a web browser even if the HTML file doesn't come from the web (for example the file is from local storage).

Additionally, users may find their way to this dialog and assume it is their only means to customize. They may stop looking and never find their way to "File Associations" leaving the user frustrated.

Here are some ideas I have for the "suggestion box":

1. Add a text label or other hint to inform the user that he may additionally want to review the File Associations for HTML type files.

2. Add a check box or button to "[x] Update file associations".

3. Ask with a Yes/No dialog if the user wants to change file associations when "Apply" is clicked.

4. Silently change the file associations automatically when the user changes the default web browser.

I personally like options 2 or 3.

For reference, it was suggested in Bug 225043 that a new bug be opened pertaining to this issue. However, a new bug would have been a duplicate of this one. It was also mentioned that the bug's product should be 'systemsettings' and component should be 'kcm_componentchooser'

Is this still a problem with a recent version of Plasma 5? Some stuff went in around 5.18 IIRC that made this finally reliable.
