Description Philippe ROUBACH 2009-11-30 16:03:52 UTC
Version: inconnu (using 4.3.2 (KDE 4.3.2), Mandriva Linux release 2010.0 (Cooker) for i586)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.31.6-desktop-69mib

add in google map "extra" feature

photos and wikipedia are useful to geolocate a photo

sometime i have a photo i don't know accurately where i took it
i only know 2 accurate points and a road between these 2 points

i use google earth hybrid view
i run along the road (map view), i try to recognize (satellite view) a spot then i failed
but happily along the road there are little blue square icons or wikipedia icons
then
i click on them then i access to many user's photos and links to info then often i find the spot where i took my photo

Philippe,

Do you use the Wikipedia and the Photos plugins from Marble ?

I am not aware of these plugins. Where to find them in Digikam ?
Comment 7 caulier.gilles 2024-01-03 16:10:58 UTC
Hi Philippe,

This one is not accessible in previous release even if it's present as Marble plugin. Marble is the software component to show map in digiKam.

With the 8.3.0 and the port to Qt6, i backported the necessary Marble code in digiKam core, as Marble team do not plan to seriously port the code to Qt6. So i do it myself, and i cleaned the code for the strict usage in digiKam.

In Marble stand alone application (qt5 version) there is an option to show Wikipedia information as an overlay on the map:

In digiKam 8.3.0 i don't yet backported the wikipedia plugin, but i can do it if there is a real needs. This is the list of currently geolocation plugins:

What to say ?

See the description of this report.

14 years ago I needed this plugin. Today much less.

We can't measure the need of this plugin with my sole case.

Such a plugin if only digikam gets it then perhaps this makes digikam shining.
Comment 10 caulier.gilles 2024-01-03 16:51:58 UTC
Note : this plugin will only work with Atlas, Satellite, and OpenStreeMaps view, not GoogleMaps.

I will take a look to backport this plugin.

Please take a look to my marble screenshot: there are other online plugins as the 'OSM Notes' : it show users notes from OpenStreeMaps web-service.
