Please add an option to set user-selected icons as the album icon. Thanks.

This can be a complex problem if we use icon from system. if after migrating/updating OS, icons diseapear, you will see a blank icon instead.

This is why using image from collection always works.

Solution : record icons to database as bytearray.

This is a general KDE problem, not a Digikam problem. Dolphin suffers from this as well. Addressing it at the application level will lead to inconsistent implementations and code fragmentation. Would you like me to file a general KDE issue on this?

It wolud be usefull to associate option of changeing icon of album with album categories that are implemented in Digikam. For example in Settings in Album categories we could create new category like Nature and asign icon to it. All albums with that category will have that icon.
