Certain web sites I see a pdf document displayed in binary.  ie the main konqueror window displays :-

%PDF-1.5 %âãÏÓ 17 0 ....

This is a direct link, ie the url is a pdf file.

Document information is displayed as :-

document encoding ISO-8859-1

server Apache/2.0.53 (Red Had)
content-type application/pdf

It doesn't seem to matter how I select the application settings, the binary contents of the pdf are always displayed.

Behavior seems to be site specific.

I'm not aware of a public web site that shows this behaviour though.

Firefox works fine.

I see this happens only with authenticated pages.

So a reproduction is at http://plord.co.uk/test/test.pdf

authenticate with user "test", password "test"
