Description Anders Lund 2009-11-04 21:59:04 UTC
Version: 4.3 (using 4.3.2 (KDE 4.3.2), Chakra KDE)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.31-ARCH

I can not trus that my distribution lists are sane. Adding contacts does not nessecarily mean that those contats are saved. I HATE THAT! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

Why isn't the contact lists saved when changed, or when kontact is closed? IT IS STUPID. EEEEEEEEEW

USELESS CRAB
I just tried again, shutting kontact down and waiting several minutes because if it is shut down and reopened soon it always crashes (another grave bug!). No, my list was not saved.

To reproduce:
1. create a distribution list
2. quit
3. if you were lucky, the list was saved.
4. add contacts to the list.
5. quit, start again: the newly added contacts are missing.

Opening kaddressbook and editing the list there does not help
Neither does deleting the list from the distlist file in KDEHOME/share/apps/kabc/. somehow, kabc managed to recreate the old list.

There is no safe way of having a list of contacts that one can easily email in the kde pim system.

distlists file

Notice the double commas in the first list! Why are those there??

Today I noticed, during another attempt at having a mailing list, that all the contacts that are displayed in a list are from the same resource. So I thought that I could move all the people in my list to the same resource, as a work around.

Kaddressbook does btw not provide any obvious way to do that. Cutting and pasting the contact will work, though.

After moving one contact to another resourse, all members of the list (minus the newly moved contact) was displayed. I readded the moved contact, and restarted kontact to see if magic saved me from moving/readding everybody. But no, after restart only people in one resource was displayed (I wonder how that resource is selected - maybe the one containing the first list member?)

But at least this will save me for now. I just hope that the arkonadi-based version of kaddressbook will make this issue go away. (And what about a better UI for creating distribution lists? The current one has many issues!)

Having switched to akonadi resources, my experiences are as follows:

After switching, I had 2 of every resource. I removed the duplicates, that seemed to work. Using akonadi means slow startup. I still gets duplicated entries for my distribution lists (which was lost in the migration process, so I had to recreate them). Is it because I have two addressbook resources? (Hm, I could try adding one more, and see if I get tripled distlists :p). Initially, I could not create distlists using akonadi resources. I was asked to select a "destination folder" from an empty list. After setting a default resource for distlists, i can create them, and in case contact does not crash during shutdown they might get saved.

Thank you for your efforts you put into this bug. kab3 has long been deprecated, and so I close its old reports. If this bug/wish is still valid for kab3's successor kaddressbook in any recent version (5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.08.0 or later), please file a new bug against kaddressbook.
