Description Oceanwatcher 2009-11-01 19:22:50 UTC
Version: 1.0 alpha 2 (using KDE 4.3.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

I would like to see a translation feature for Choqok that uses Google Translate to translate tweets and dents.

This feature should have a settingstab where you can specify the language to translate too so that you only need one dropdown in the mainwindow for language to translate from.

In the main interface, there could be a button/dropdown next to the "in reply to" link that allow you to choose the language of the tweet (that you need translation from). This should show the message within the same window (just as the "in reply to" function does) so we do not loose the context.

This would be a fantastic tool for international communication and AFAIK it would be a feature Choqok is alone in having.

There are a lot of countries around the world where English is not very well spoken and people mainly use their native language when tweeting/denting. I have several people like this on my list and would love to see what they write in their own language.

I know Google Translate is not perfect, but it is often possible to get the meaning if you only can get an approximate translation.

Translated message

A translated message with the language drop-down for source selection.
Comment 5 Oceanwatcher 2010-01-09 21:26:44 UTC
Normally, the source selection in a translated message would be on Auto-detect, but if that is not working, you should be able to use a dro-down as in my suggestion to correct the source language.

Also, Choqok should remeber the most used languages and put them at the top of the list the same way Google Translate does.

Google has an API for languages that hopefully will help in getting this feature into Choqok. Unfortunately, I am not a programmer so I am not able to do it myself.

BTW - The translate icon is done by Casey Bisson and you can find more about it on

http://maisonbisson.com/blog/post/12003/language-translation-icon/

While the icon is not ideal, it was the best I found during my short search :-)

Now with the link:

Sorry for that!

It would be good to add Apertium as an option, they have a Google compatible translation API -- so it would not add much work -- and, well, it's free & open source software :) See api.apertium.org

Ideally one should be able to use an offline apertium installation too, for privacy and speed, but perhaps that would have fewer users.

Oh, I just forgot to mark this as done :)
A plugin added to latest development version of Choqok that implement this feature!

But to use it you should right click on post and there you'll see the translate menu entry if Translator plugin is enabled! (And you have to select target languages you want to show in plugin configuration)

About "Apertium" implementation, We'll check it later (Just because its free software :D) We have translate for now!
