Workaround: I found that if you remove your Archive directory, Akregator will open as it should. The Archive folder on my system (Kubuntu 9.10) is located here: ~/.kde/share/apps/akregator/Archive I assume that's the same place for most people. It appears that the only thing lost by the removal is saved feed items.
