Description Alex 2009-10-22 01:09:50 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.1)
Compiler: gcc 4.3.4 Gentoo 4.3.4 p1.0, pie-10.1.5
OS: Linux
Installed from: Gentoo Packages

best i can tell kde4 totally ignores the specified order of items in the panel. I have a panel with several applications in it similar to the osx dock. Basically on start kde pics some random order for my panel icons and widgets. seems to start happening after about 12 icons. Currently i have about 24 items and the last 5 or so come up in different spots each time i start kde.

Here is my current layout:
K Launch Menu, Pager, Device Notifier, Sys Settings, konsole, firefox, seamonkey, thunderbird, amarok, pidgin, wine mysql query browser, wine mysql admin, eclipse*, kate, okteta*, kcalc*, dolphin*, cpu graph*, mem graph*, system tray*, digial clock*, trash can*.

All the "*" items are the ones wondering around the most. Moving them back to where they belong does not help after the plasma desktop is restarted.

I have been messing around with this all day and I have tried rebuilding my .kde4 folder several times. Rebuild the .local folder and even tried a new user with the same results. I even tired removing different items from the doc to see if one particular one was causing this but it just looks like after you exceed some number it just cant keep track anymore.

can you attach a plasma-desktop and plasma-desktop-appletsrc file to this report that demonstrates the problem? thanks.

wasn't there once a problem with a widget that did something wierd with it's size int the constructor or so, and this would then mess up the order of the items?

I have the same problem with KDE 4.3.1 as shipped with openSUSE 11.2:

The order of application buttons in the panels is shuffled upon reboot. I also have the feeling that it is mostly KDE applications that shift their position.

I have 4 panels in a multi-screen setup (reverse Nvidia TwinView, i.e. primary screen is on the left). Each screen has one panel on the top with the task manager (and the systray on the primary screen) and one coverable panel on the side with application buttons (Launcher, Dolphin, Recycle Bin, Kate, Kile, Amarok, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.). Widgets are locked. Upon reboot, their order is usually altered.

However, every other reboot is with a single screen only. Hence only the two panels on the primary screen are shown then, as expected. Resolutions: primary 1280x800 and secondary on the right with 1950x1050.

Furthermore, the panels themselves sometimes shift from centred to one side, and change from "Windows can cover" to "Always visible", but this may be unrelated, since it also occurs independently of reboot (e.g. when altering something in "DesktopCashew->ConfigurePlasma").

screen shot of the issue

Here is a screen shot illustrating the issue. I have run into this issue on all 3 of my computers running kde 4.3.1-4.3.3 on both x86 and x86_64. There is a crash that could be related when I shut down X and kde to return to the command prompt:

KCrash: Application crashing...
KCrash: Application 'kwin' crashing...
