Description topher.wheeler 2009-10-15 01:35:44 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Gentoo Packages

The Digital Clock Settings (accessed by right-clicking the clock on the taskbar) do not have an option to display the clock in 12-hour AM/PM format. This would be a *very* nice feature.

Thanks,
Chris

This could be fixed by just formatting the date as specified in System Settings > Regional & Language.
As it is, the clock displays the date in the format DD MONTH YYYY no matter what.

The time format displayed in the panel clock is taken from the global settings, as noted above. Go into System Settings / Regional & Language / Time & Dates and in the Time Format combo you can click on the down arrow to select the AM/PM time option. Choose Apply, then you will probably need to log out and in again for this to take effect.

If this doesn't work, or you mean you want to be able to override the global setting, then please reopen this bug with more details.

The date formatting issue is a completely separate one.

This is a feature request. Putting the option to adjust the properties of a desktop widget in *only* the system settings makes little sense. KDE4 comes across as a fairly big environment, and even as an experienced GNU/Linux user, this one baffled me enough to take the time to file this feature request.

I think that any settings relating to such a widget should be accessible *in context* from a context menu. This could simply open the system settings / regional / time & date for the user, either directly from a choice in the right-click menu, or deeper in the "configure clock" choice.

I like the idea of being able to override the global setting too.

In KDE 3.5, I do see the option "Date & Time Format...", which leads me to a tab that allows this. Maybe I'm just missing it in KDE4 - If so, I apologize for wasting anyone's time.

Thanks,
Chris

No, no. I wasted much more time looking for it as well, back from KDE 4.0.3 (nearly 2 years), I was hoping there would be a section to adjust from the 24-hour format (and why is that default anyway?) with each release.

There needs to be a "Adjust Regional Date & Time Settings" context menu option, which should take you RIGHT TO THE DATE AND TIME SETTINGS!
This isn't a suggestion, it's a requirement, every OS for sale has the 12-hour option somewhere located by their clock. This is the only one I've seen that separates it!

I spent 2 years looking for this option by the clock, and when I finally asked in the IRC channel 40 minutes ago, I was told immediately. I was apparently the only one that retarded to not see it. Equally retarded is not having that there.

Put it in, please. This is retarded.

hi,
yeah it would be nice to have that feature back its not new just should still be there . Who thinks of looking there to change it even if you go to the setting classic/new menu . I'd also like to see the dialog where you change the time to have the option of 12hr format too. Clock above or not I'd still like it to display in that format too. not only do i like the clock in 12hr format but to change it I'd like that too.

so to have right click on the panel clock with adjust the time format . This would be another bug that needs to be opened ?
I've been noticing that when I do change the time(kde4.4.0) that the panel clock doesn't change right away. I'm doing to much stuff as most to log out and back in to have it change :) . The hover over shows the time change right away thou.

The plasma clock should update to the correct time after a minute, unless you have display seconds turned on when it will update after a second. This is because the plasma clock will only poll the system clock when it needs to to save battery life. See bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=181380. If it doesn't please open a new bug.

I'm not sure providing a link in the rmb menu is the right way to go. I have plans to completely change the way the clock does date and time formatting which would lie in the plasma clock's own settings, but that's down my priority list a bit.

Patch to allow a 12 hour clock fomat for the digital-clock widget

Well this bug also bothered me, so I wrote a patch for it. Pity I didn't think to look in system settings.

We have discussed this option on the plasma developers list and decided this
option will not be added to the standard clock widget. If you wish to pursue the RMB option for "Set Time/Date Format" please open a separate wish.
