Description Tony White 2009-10-12 01:16:54 UTC
Version: 3.5 (using KDE 4.3.1)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Fedora RPMs

When you left click on kmix in the tray you get a volume slider to use but it only moves the master volume slider.
There should be a way and this should be default because most modern cards are pcm, to use that slider to move both the pcm and the master channel at the same time in parallel.
Obviously a check box below the two channels when you expand the mixer would be nice for the people that don't want to use that but I can't see there being many people not wanting this by default.
The reason for wanting this is that sound is distorted or lower quality if the pcm or master sliders are not parallel.

Distorted?!? Well, this is clearly not true. At least not for the 10 soundcards I personally know. If you get distortion when pcm or master sliders are not parallel, please report that to the soundcard driver developers (then you have a severe hardware or driver issue).

Also the "Lower quality" argument is nonsense in my opinion. Sound quality has not much to do with the volume. The sound is louder or softer, thats it. Sound quality is basically influenced by mixing (software and hardware) and clipping (which leads to distortion). Clipping happens if the sound is too loud and can also happen if you only play one stream. Best bet is then to keep one slider limited (e.g. Master), and working only with the other slider (e.g. PCM),

But there are other situations, like in Bug 113627. I'll just mark this as duplicate, as this would then autmoatically be solved also.
