What I was doing when the application crashed:
I am running PCLinuxOS with KDE 4.3.2 like the other two users who reported the problem. The crash occurs as soon as you try to change anything manually on the desktop or even to click on Start after the desktop is fully loaded (including Skype, aMsn and Timidity through Autostart). When the desktop is reloaded, it is fully functional although the little opaque squares behind the icons give it a rather gothic look.
