Possibly this is because you are using Gnome and it takes a while to load in all the KDE dependencies. I cannot reproduce the problem here, running Kolf 1.9 with KDE 4.3.1. Unfortunately, the maintainer of Kolf is no longer around, but some of the KDE Games team are writing Kolf 2, a new 3-D version of Kolf, to replace Kolf 1.9, maybe in the second half of next year. Meanwhile, I am providing only dire-emergency maintenance on Kolf 1.9, so I regret that I am not in a position to help you further with this.
