if I enable the kwin desktop effects or if I start compiz, the desktop goes black. when I turn them back off the desktop comes back.
when it's on the desktop doesn't come back even if logging out then back in.

my computer has working 3d acceleration.
a couple of times I got it working kwin acceleration+desktop but I don't remember what I did to make it work.

This is ubuntu karmic so it may be because the system is still alpha.

my graphics card is ATI r200, free software driver.

this is a driver, GPU and/or x.org configuration issue.
