Version: (using KDE 4.3.1) OS: Linux Installed from: SuSE RPMs Since KDE 4.3.0 very often after using Kontact for a while and then quitting it, the process remains active (without using CPU time, however). I then have to kill it manually. Otherwise it refuses to start again and will also be considered "running" by the KDE session manager, which will start it automatically at the next login.
I can observe the same behavior with Kdemod 4.3.1 on archlinux.
I can reliably trigger this bug by doing the following: 1) start Kontact 2) click on 'Feeds' 3) click on 'Complete Story' in any feed 4) close the newly opened tab 5) quit Kontact
still present in KDE 4.3.2
It happens here too with Slackware and KDE 4.3.2. I think https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208510 is a duplicate of this report.

still present in KDE 4.3.3
confirmed for kde 4.3.3 on debian-sid-64 and on kubuntu-64

This thread: http://lists.kde.org/?t=125960344900003&r=1&w=2 suggests that it may have something to do with having month view selected in KOrganizer when shutting down Kontact. I tried Anne's suggestion and could confirm it. Others couldn't confirm it though.
I can confirm this bug for KDE 4.3.4 on openSUSE 11.2 x86_64 too, but only if I mark news as read (doesn't matter if it is done automatic or manual). If I don't, Kontact closes without problems. Akregator without Kontact doesn't seem to have this problem. It closes completely although I mark new news as read. Any changes in KOrganizer doesn't work for me.
same here on Gentoo (kde 4.3.4) x86_64

If I > don't, Kontact closes without problems. > Akregator without Kontact doesn't seem to have this problem. It closes > completely although I mark new news as read. > Any changes in KOrganizer doesn't work for me. The above report may be somewhat misleading. There is no affect when marking a news post in knode - the usual context of "news". If however you mark an article in Kaggregator from an RSS Feed, the problem definitely occurs then. I, too, am using OpenSuse 11.2 64 bit version with KDE 4.3.4.
In the following case the bug does not occur: 1) Enable the tray icon for Akregator 2) Follow procedure from comment #2 except for last step 3) Quit Kontact through the context menu of the Akregator tray icon In this case I get an additional dialog "Do you really want to quit Kontact?" and no hanging process remains after pressing "Ok".
After upgrading to KDE 4.4, I no longer see this behavior.
Is this going to be fixed in 4.3.5? I'm reluctant to move to 4.4 until the distro adds it. (Opensuse)
This problem regarding "Mark (all) feeds as read" still exists using Kubuntu 11.04 (Natty) alpha 1 AMD64 (Kontact 4.4.7, KDE 4.5.80 (4.6 Beta1), Akregator 1.6.5) I had no problems with month view or opening feeds in tabs as described before. Closing Kontact via the Akregator tray icon works well as a workaround.
(In reply to comment #14) > After upgrading to KDE 4.4, I no longer see this behavior. Thanks for the feedback. Closing.
Whoa! Maybe not so fast ;-) I've been wanting to update this bug report for a while but kept procrastinating ;-) If you have your calendar or contacts on a remote server (I use http://www.memotoo.com ) Kontact syncs on close spawning off a KIO process which can take up to a couple of minutes to complete. Until the KIO process has finished the Kontact process is still alive, although idle. If you quit Kontact and then log out before the syncing is complete it will be started by the SM on next login but fail with an error saying something like "Kontact seems to be running in another process." This is Kontact 4.4.9 on KDE SC 4.6 RC2 on Kubuntu 10.10.
