Description Russ Brown 2009-09-02 17:43:39 UTC
Version: 3.3.1 (using KDE 4.3.0)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

I'm actually running kde 4.3.1 (wasn't an option in the dropdown at the start of this process).

I'm getting quite frustrated by the fact that every time I start kate, I need to select the plugins I want to use all over again each and every time.

I then need to reconfigure my shortcut for that plugin again too.

In my case the plugin in question is Quick Document Switcher.

Thanks.

the selection of plugins is stored as part of the session. Hence when you select to start kate always with an empty session you'll always get the default selection of plugins.

OK, so I closed kate, opened it again and selected my session. Indeed, the plugin was selected. The keyboard shortcut was not, but I believe that is covered in another bug report.

Having said that though, my problem usually occurs just after logging in, when kate appears automatically and with all of my documents open. I just tested this out twice. I followed these steps:

 1. Turn on the plugin.
 2. Quit kate
 3. Start kate
 4. See that the plugin is still enabled.
 5. Log out
 6. Log back in again
 7. Kate starts automatically, and loads the same session as before.
 8. See that the plugin is *not* enabled
 9. Tell kate to load the session again
10. See that the plugin is still not enabled.

Note that I get the same behaviour even if I explicitly save the session between steps 4 and 5.

One more thing I tried was to close kate down completely before logging out (after saving the session). After logging back in again and loading kate and the session manually, the plugin *is* enabled.

However, even after this, the above steps will clear it once again.

So it seem that for one reason or another, the configuration is being forgotten if you log out with kate running.

How do you know the session is re-opened? IIRC there's a bugreport open for kate not restoring a session when you're logging out and back in of kde. So this is either an invalid report (if we take the original report) or a duplicate of some other (that I'm too lazy right now to search).

Configure your Kate. Then do Sessions > Save as Default.

Commenting here for completeness...

I know that the session is re-opened because kate shows the session name in the title bar.

Tried the Save as Default suggestion, but it didn't work. Logging back in still opens my session automatically with no plugins enabled.

Bug 156330 does look like it covers my case though, so I'll track that instead.

Thanks for your help.

Is [x] Save Session in the config page in the category "Bevahior on Application Exit or Session Switch" in the "Sessions" entry chosen?
