Description Dotan Cohen 2009-08-28 01:52:24 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.0)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

When a user attaches any USB flash drive, Dolphin shows the drive as "Volume (vfat)". I think that it would be better if Dolphin showed then name of the device as shown in lsusb, for instance "SanDisk Corp. Cruzer Micro 1/4GB Flash Drive" or even just "SanDisk".
Comment 1 d.account 2010-01-18 23:39:40 UTC
Konqueror in kde 3.5 series allowed the name of the drive to be typed in and it was retained. It was a useful feature.
Comment 2 Dotan Cohen 2010-01-19 09:20:42 UTC
d.account may be referring to the Volume Name, I do not have a KDE 3 system to check if that is what KDE 3 did. I agree that if there is a volume name assigned (as opposed to the default NO NAME) then the Volume Name should be shown instead of the device identifier from lsusb. Of course, a way to edit the Volume Name would be nice too.

Bug 224056 requests additional Context Menu options in Places, including Volume Name changing.

On KDE 4.4.5 if the partition label exists, it is correctly printed. Could we consider this wish as fixed?

It would be nice if I could change the name like I can do it with every other entry in the places sidebar. And this doesn't only affect usb sticks. I don't want to re-label my SD cards everytime I format them in a camera. And I don't want to touch my partitions on my harddisks just to see another better name in dolphin. It would be great if I just could rightclick on one of those partition entries in the places sidebar and could change the name, just for the use in dolphin. Some descriptions/names are so long, they make all the icons in the places sidebar awfully small. You can change the names for toolbar icons, you can change the name for all other items in the places sidebar - why not for the devices?

The initial request has since been fulfilled. Please use bug 224056 to track the wish to rename the device instead.
