Version: (using KDE 4.3.0) Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages When I move the panel from one screen edge to another, the notification icon - the blue/grey (i) - disappears from the system tray. Actually I think it's still there, but it's hidden behind one of the other icons.

yes, it's hidden behind the xembed icons. in fact, as can be seen the whole widget is only drawing enough space for 2 icons. it works here, but it may be something with the particular configuration of the panel on your system.
The "broken systemtray layout" after moving between screen edges is also described and being tracked on bug 203383. Should them be merged ? Thanks
