Version: Mint 7 Gloria KDE 4.3.0 (using KDE 4.3.0) OS: Linux Installed from: Ubuntu Packages Would like to see an "SMS" feature like the type found in huawei modems 3g watcher for MS Win "Sorry for mentioning these words >ms< >win<" Australian Broadband Providers support this feature, and it would be good to see it on KDE Eg; Optus uses the sim cards ph no to connect (APN; "preconnect") no user name or pass word (just like a cell phone) Vodafone connection manager is supposed to, work on linux but I can not find a server to download it to Aus.
I am new to linux/unix yes I have fallen victim to Bill Gates Cruelty so far I have found it to be a good OS would like to help in any way I can Have used ;-"Puppy","Linpus Lite","PCLinuxOS09","ubuntu 9.04","kubuntu 9.04", "OpenSolaris","Mint 7 Gloria" and now "Mint 7 Gloria KDE" I would like to one day make my own distro was thinking something like ( "AlianWare OS KDE Lite" ) (not a real name just a concept)
This most certainly does not belong in System Settings. Reassigning to Network Management, since they would need to provide the "configuration" for this.
This is a good feature request but it's low priority for me. IMO this feature shouldn't go in the Network Management tool but in the usual messaging apps. We are currently merging in the Modem Manager classes needed to support this. After that has happened these classes could be used in a appropriate way, for example, as a part of the Kopete SMS plugin to send SMS directly from your Address Book.
Yep I agree with this I also have a huawei modem and I would not mind having the sms facility working from a GUI not from the command line. I was thinking this maybe easy enough to add to kopete as a plugin, since it has the address book and all the other assorted requirements. Even if it is just for basic send and receive.. The commands to send and receive are all standard we just need to provide the port and the connect string to the device. I am not sure you would need to add it to the network tools as it is a messaging function.. Some of this may duplicate Kmobile tools functionality but i dont see a problem with overlapping products, one gives you full functionality the other gives you basic functions..
Modem-manager has the API interface for SMS management but as far as I know none of its plugins actually implements SMS handling, so for now it is useless to use Modem-manager for that. The is also true for contacts management.
Reassign Network Management bugs to new maintainer. Have a lot of fun, Lamarque!
What's the state of this? is SMS api any useul now?
Yes, this is valid and the SMS api works in ModemManager for some modems. I just have never had the time to start implementing this.
The SMS/Messaging interface in ModemManager works/should-work for every GSM/HSPA/LTE modem out there. See also: http://sigquit.wordpress.com/2012/09/14/sms-goodies-in-modemmanager/
This has been implemented in KDE Telepathy [1]. I am marking this as "wontfix" because this feature is not going to be implemented in Plasma NM. Use KDE Telepathy instead for sending/receiving sms. [1] https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=325528
