Description Ian Turner 2009-08-11 02:08:20 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.0)

The existing icon for "restart application" is not intuitive, at least in the default theme. An ideal icon would capture the idea of reloading or restarting. Any of the following existing Oxygen icons might be a better choice:

- edit-clear-history
- games-solve
- mail-folder-outbox
- document-revert
Comment 1 Dario Andres 2009-09-21 00:29:25 UTC
@Nuno: can you help me with this request ? Do you think one of the existing FDO icon names could fit the "restart application" metaphor ?
Thanks!!
Comment 2 Dario Andres 2009-11-25 20:10:10 UTC
I like the current "edit-clear-history" icon... however that would only work for the Oxygen... other icon themes could use another metaphor which could look out of place.

May be we can use "system-run", what do you think ?
Comment 3 Ian Turner 2009-11-25 20:26:21 UTC
Oxygen's system-run would make sense to me as a taskbar icon for drkonqui overall, but doesn't make sense to me for "restart application". Perhaps the solution is to create a new "restart" icon type and make it the same as edit-clear-history for Oxygen.
Comment 4 Dario Andres 2009-11-25 20:28:41 UTC
That could make sense. We already have a "application-exit" icon in actions... a "application-restart" could be added...

as usual i have no idea what you guys are talking about a screnshoot please :=)

haa that one well I think it fits well enough the action id if i would do a new icon for that it would be in the same lines as the reboot icon used right now...

pinheiro, I think Dario's screenshot is the proposed change... Attachment 38582 [details] is what the icon looks like today.
Comment 10 Dario Andres 2009-11-25 22:00:18 UTC
No.... I see why you were complaining.....

The screenshot I posted is using the same icon as in KDE4.3... but in a full KDE environment (with Oxygen icons) (it is the current icon, not a proposal...)

@Ian: it seems you are running KDE applications inside Gnome, or at least using a different icon theme...
That may be the "system-reboot" icon in the Ubuntu icon theme ???

The "system-reboot" icon is the one I posted (at least in the Oxygen theme....)
So.... may be this is a bug in the Ubuntu icon theme (I would not associate that "PC" icon with "system-reboot" )...

- Can you confirm this ?
Comment 11 Dario Andres 2009-11-25 22:24:33 UTC
@Nuno: so... a "new" should not be needed yet... as this may be a problem in the default Ubuntu icon theme...
Comment 12 Ian Turner 2009-11-25 22:27:54 UTC
Hmm. Perhaps this is a system configuration or Ubuntu bug, then. I am running KDE applications on Ubuntu (not Kubuntu) 9.04 "Jaunty Jantalope".

I agree that Oxygen's system-reboot makes sense.
Comment 13 Dario Andres 2009-11-25 22:40:29 UTC
The "system-reboot" icon is a standard one:
http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec-latest.html
"The icon used for the “Reboot” item in the desktop's panel application. "

However, it seems that the Gnome and Ubuntu icon themes do not contain it:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=contents&keywords=system-reboot&mode=filename&suite=karmic&arch=any

They implement their reboot icon with a different name:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=contents&keywords=reboot.png&mode=filename&suite=karmic&arch=any

So this seems to be a Gnome/Ubuntu related issue, about not honoring the freedesktop.org standard icon naming scheme.......
Comment 14 pinheiro 2009-11-25 22:44:07 UTC
So I'm closing this bug, if i would do an icon for this it would be very
similar to the reboot icon, and IMO it's not needed at least for now.
Thanks for pointing it out IAN, you should try a more "vanila kde" experience
its much better ;)
