Description Jens Herden 2009-08-06 20:25:34 UTC
Version:            (using KDE 4.3.0)
OS:                Linux
Installed from:    SuSE RPMs

I am running my KDE 4 in German but when I try to start KMail in another language I get a German/English mixed user interface.
I started KMail with:
    KDE_LANG=en_US kmail

When I look into the configuration of KMail most of it is English but some strings are still German.
I will attach a screenshot so you can see yourself.

And the same is happening when I change the application language via the entry in the Help menu.

I also tested KWrite but there I can't see this bug.

Cheers Jens

Most likely some sort of setup problem, and also a problem with KDE in general.
I think for some of those to work, KDE needs to be restarted.

> Most likely some sort of setup problem,

you are guessing here, right?
So please give me some hints where this setup problem might be. I am willing
to invest some time to find out what is wrong in my setup.

> and also a problem with KDE in general.

So why are you closing this report then?

> I think for some of those to work, KDE needs to be restarted.

Restart did not resolve this bug. The latest packages from OpenSuse neither.

I don't agree that this bug gets closed like this. worksforme is not acceptable at this point, especially because it is still not working for me.

I am reopening this bug.

There is another (working for me) way to start a kde 4 program in another language (without the need for the environment variable). It is using the menu help|change application language.
Comment 5 Martin Koller 2009-09-01 23:47:05 UTC
You get the mixture if you do not also change the language in the systemsettings / Country/Region / Locale.
Please verify and close the bug if you checked it.
Thanks.

@Jaime
I am aware of this possibility. In my intial bug report I was saying that this way also produces the wrong result.

@Martin
I tested your suggestion and yes it makes a difference. I got the impression that some of the strings only follow the settings in the control center.
The intention of the environment variable (and the entry in the Help menu) is to change the language without beeing forced to go to the control center and change the language for the whole of KDE4.
So there is clearly a bug somewhere. Especially because other applications, like Kate, do not show this behavior.
I will change the bug back to reopened.

Hi all,

I can confirm this behaviour at a friend's notebook, too. Neither setting the language to German in the SystemSettings-Menu did work, nor the setting in Help > Choose Language to German.

She has still a mixed German/English surface, especially to be seen in kmail.

Might be a bug in SystemSettings, IMO. Strange: By adding a new user i.e. testuser, everything is working fine.

I think, some config-files are not changed, when they exist, only when they are created new.

Best regards

Hans-J. Ullrich

Is comment #3 to bug 115717 relevant here? It says that strings from sycoca (i.e. those originally defined in desktop files) will not be translated even if KDE_LANG is set.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
