What version of kdesvn? Kompare works just fine with kdesvn for me.
According to the 'About kdesvn' window: kdesvn 1.2.4 and KDE 4.2.2. For your information: This morning, after applying ubuntu updates including one for Subversion (see: http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-812-1), *Kompare* is now running normally (no startup crashes), both started 'manually' and from kdesvn. I have not changed any setting myself, just applied the update Ubuntu Subversion update.
