Description putt1ck 2009-07-29 10:43:28 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.98)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Does not cause crash but does nothing but harm to the user experience. If not fixable recommend disabling when dual displays present or having message regarding information on manual configuration.

How to reproduce: have a multi-head graphics configuration with non-proprietary drivers; attach two or more screens; enter System Settings/Display or launch krandrtray, right-click and select Configure Display; note two monitors exist (which if of different resolutions are both set to the lower monitor's resolution and selecting a higher resolution results in no change or error message; note no option to set one monitor to one side or above/below the other; note frankly stupid message in Multiple Monitors section telling you it is for people with dual monitors and you don't have them.

Expected behaviour: enter System Settings/Display or launch krandrtray, right-click and select Configure Display; have options to place one monitor to one side or above/below the other(s) and ability to select and apply appropriate resolutions for those.

Specifically using X1650 on Kubuntu 9.04 with radeon driver and KDE 4.3RC3 from PPA.

Note further that dual head on this setup works perfectly if configured with xorg.conf and/or xrandr. Instructions posted here: http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=62111&start=0#p84062 for those who want dual-screen loveliness. Yet further, and the most annoying trait, having manually achieved a gorgeous and highly effective dual-head setup if you click on System Settings/Display or start krandrtray, everything reverts instantly to single resolution mirrored displays x-(

Developers note the clue to at least ameliorating the most annoying behaviour may be in this observation, copied [and annotated] from above forum post:

"when krandrtray started [breaking manually configured dual head :( ] it defaulted to "unify outputs", which is clearly wrong and is an illogical starting point [if you have one monitor, no need to unify outputs, if you have two more likely than not want to them run their own resolutions]. Once you have unticked that then fixed the display with xrandr, the settings module called by left-clicking krandrtray recognises the existence of multiple monitors (although does not allow re-positioning)."

Happy to help with testing, debug traces etc. (may need instructions on such activity :) )
