Version: (from SVN) OS: Linux Installed from: Ubuntu monolithic icon is not very visible in tray icon with some themes, for example: Theme Air (see snapshoot : http://imagebin.org/57121 ) Thanks
All the icons are preliminary Please set the Platform field carefully when you report a bug, otherwise it looks like your distro are already distributing unreleased code when you are really using SVN yourself.

Sorry. I build kdelibs, kdepimlibs, kdebase, kdeartwork and kde4's networkmanagement from SVN (trunk). thanks

The icon is still quite poor in the version released in Kubuntu Lucid. Here are some notable problems: 1. It's not the least bit obvious that it represents wireless networking at all. It has neither vertical nor arched signal bars, both of which are standard on both laptops and cell phones. 2. The little square black and white icon in the lower left corner, which seems to change with connection status, is so small that even though I know it has something to do with status, I can't tell what it means. It's useless. 3. The colors make the signal bar difficult to read, even though I know what it is. Please, for goodness' sake, just use the one that GNOME is using in Ubuntu. It's perfectly clear, it looks pleasant, and it looks standard. Even the KNetworkManager 0.6.6 in Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy was perfectly clear and pleasant, but this one in Lucid is awful.
Created attachment 43587 [details] use gnome applet-network-manager animation
I created a package for Lucid uses icons from GNOME (animation): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mklyoh09v1s To use it in Lucid: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:daniel-rocher/ppa sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and restart your session.
Thanks for the patch, Daniel! I'm less than convinced, as the patch changes knetworkmanager from "the icon is hardly visible" to "sticks out like a sore thumb". GNOME's NM artwork is really not that great and looks dated. It also totally does not fit the new, monochrome system tray. For the plasmoid, we already have new artwork, it would be better to integrate that with KNM, instead of using GNOME's artwork which looks dated and out of place.

Is this bug still relevant or can I close it? Monolithic knetworkmanager is unmaintained.
The Plasma widget for Network Manager uses the same icons and has the same issue. Looking at it now (Kubuntu Natty), there's this tiny little square in the lower right corner that is unintelligible. Compare this to the GNOME 2/Unity applet--that one looks so much better than the one in KDE right now. :(
I do not see any square at the lower right corner, the "Manage Connection" button is at the lower right corner. I will reopen the bug, but I am not goint to take any action about it for a long time. I have plenty of other more important problems to solve in Plasma NM.
I'm sorry, it turns out my laptop still had the knetworkmanager package installed--upgrading to Natty didn't replace it with plasma-widget-networkmanagement, which doesn't have this little square overlay. They really ought to have transitioned it automatically, IMHO. Now, however, after killing knetworkmanager and installing the widget, NM became disconnected, and there is no way to reconnect it! Even using nmcli, there's just no way to get the wifi interface to connect to anything at all. I had to reboot to make the connection work again. I guess I'll have to file yet another bug. (Will NM and/or its GUIs ever not be broken? There's been basic broken functionality ever since it was first released.) On Tue, May 17, 2011 at 11:22, Lamarque V. @#12: check if in nm the "wireless enabled" checkbox is checked! after upgrading my netbook to natty i had the same issue (wifi would not connect although shown as available by iwconfig). took me some time to figure that out ...
Yes, everything was checked. There was simply no list of wireless networks in the widget, and no "connect" button. When I ran (nmcli con), all that showed up was: NAME UUID TYPE SCOPE TIMESTAMP-REAL Ifupdown (eth0) 681b428f-beaf-8932-dce4-687ed5bae28e 802-3-ethernet system never NAME UUID TYPE SCOPE TIMESTAMP-REAL Whereas now, after rebooting, it shows: NAME UUID TYPE SCOPE TIMESTAMP-REAL Ifupdown (eth0) 681b428f-beaf-8932-dce4-687ed5bae28e 802-3-ethernet system never NAME UUID TYPE SCOPE TIMESTAMP-REAL The Disarray 5fd3685d-92f7-4ef4-8533-ec69fe48dbf8 802-11-wireless user Wed 18 May 2011 03:50:43 PM CDT Valencia d1038ef0-853c-49c8-a80f-9aea4a56e482 802-11-wireless user Thu 13 Jan 2011 07:05:58 PM CST Killing knetworkmanager apparently totally breaks NetworkManager. It even set [ifupdown] to managed=false in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf! But even after changing it to managed=true and even after restarting the network-manager service several times, it still didn't work! I had to reboot! (What is this, Windows? IMHO NetworkManager is fundamentally broken and should be thrown out.) Have you checked if the networkmanagement service is running? Go in systemsettings -> Startup and Shutdown. In the lower panel named "Services loaded during startup" (or something like that, mine is in Brazilian Portuguese) can you see if the service "NetworkManager user configurator" (or something like that) is marked as started? If no then make select it, check the checkbox to start at session load and click in the start button to start it right away. Also send me the output of this command: qdbus org.kde.networkmanagement
I don't think the bug was in knetworkmanager nor the Plasma widget, but in NetworkManager. Even nmcli wouldn't work, and restarting the service didn't help. On Wed, May 18, 2011 at 17:06, Lamarque V. I will close this bug as fixed since the original bug was fixed in the plasmoid version. Other questions about the systray wifi icon please go to http://bugs.kde.org/275707 @Adam Porter, if you still have problems making the plasmoid work please fill in another bug entry.
