Description homoludens 2009-07-21 02:13:52 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.4)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

Supposedly, kde4-Kopete has been updated to copy with the changes in Yahoo's network management, but I'm still unable to connect to the network (other people, however, tell me that things work fine for them).

I've run Kopete from CLI; here is the output I get (I have two Yahoo accounts activated, therefore error messages appear twice):

I really understand this. I've just upgraded to KDE 4.3 on openSUSE 11.1, using a clean install (wiped my hard drive; installed openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.1; upgraded to KDE 4.3), so there should be no personal, customized settings on my system.

Nevertheless, connecting to the Yahoo protocol STILL doesn't work (even when using different accounts, so it's not a matter of my getting the usernames / passwords right), despite the fact that others have told me that it works for them. What is it about my computer that doesn't work?
Comment 3 Matt Rogers 2009-09-06 04:05:48 UTC
If you can install Wireshark and capture packet traces on tcp port 5050
when connecting to Yahoo, this will help us determine what the problem
is. Thanks

Matt,

I've installed Wireshark and tried to get the info you requested, but it's a pretty complex program and clearly above my level of technological expertise. :-(

Naturally you won't be able to give me an introduction to the program, but if you could tell me briefly what I need to do, what kind of output data you need, and how I can save these, I'd greatly appreciate it ...
Comment 5 homoludens 2009-09-27 13:45:44 UTC
Hmmm, I've tried to capture Wireshark's output for TCP port 5050 when I try to connect to Yahoo. No idea how to save the data the right / desired way, but perhaps this screenshot of the summary provides some clues?

Was the information I posted the other day of any use? I'm eager to fix my connection problem, so please tell me if there is anything else I could do ...

Wireshark PlainText Dump of tcp port 5050 while asking Kopete to connect to Yahoo

Isn't working for me as well.

ArchLinux (up-to-date) x64_86
Kopete's about reports version -> 0.80.2
KDE 4.3.2

Tested with two accounts. Pidgin works with both so it isn't an account issue.

Attached, upon previous developer request, a dump of port 5050 data via WireShark while asking Yahoo protocol to connect.

I tried the devel version again and it still does not seem to work. If there's ANY information you need do let me know, I'll be glad to provide :)

At the moment, the yahoo-part of code seems to be overwhelming to me to try and fix it myself but am willing to do so with some minor guidance :)
Comment 10 homoludens 2010-01-13 02:58:23 UTC
I just updated to openSUSE 11.2; erased my hard hard drive and created a new, clean system without importing any of my previous files. Yet, Kopete still doesn't connect to my Yahoo account ... :(

Is there ANYTHING I can do to fix this?
Comment 11 Matt Rogers 2010-01-17 04:32:21 UTC
I don't have any problems with the upcoming KDE 4.4 release. Kopete doesn't support proxies, so make sure you're not using one (proxy type doesn't matter, we don't support HTTP or SOAP proxies)
Comment 12 Harsh J 2010-01-17 08:19:26 UTC
Matt - It isn't a problem affecting all. Its occurring perhaps only for those whose accounts have been temporarily suspended and reactivated due to "too many failed login attempts".

In the same issue, Pidgin sometimes requests the user to open a browser and keep Yahoo's mail account open in it to solve this "temp ban" issue and doing that once solves the connection issues in Pidgin - just thought this piece of information may help. Doing the same while using Kopete does not help, though.

I'm using the devel version (fresh off trunk, like my KDE SC is too) and have a direct connection to the internet - no proxies, never learned to set one up.

I'll understand if the WORKSFORME still persists, as devs don't have all the time in the world (I tried fixing this myself, but am totally new to Y! MSG stuff) and I can use Meebo/etc when I require Yahoo services :)

Just created a yahoo profile. It does happen to me since my first login.

Sorry, I have to re-open this bug. Just upgraded to KDE 4.4 / Kopete 1.0 on openSUSE 11.2, but I'm still experiencing problems with accessing the Yahoo network.

I got two accounts, and both give me an error message "The password was wrong. Please re-enter your password for Yahoo account xxx." Somehow, however, entering the right password (I've verified it several times, no chance that it is wrong) doesn't help since the error message gets repeated over and over.

I've also installed Empathy, and there everything is fine (the passwords work fine, as does the log-on process to the Yahoo nework; no error messages whatsoever).
Comment 15 homoludens 2010-02-25 05:44:51 UTC
PS: What data can I provide that would help the developers look into the problem?
Comment 16 homoludens 2010-07-27 15:09:37 UTC
Just noticed it's exactly one year since I first filed this bug. I'm now running openSUSE 11.3 and KDE 4.4.4, but still nothing when it comes to trying to connect to Yahoo with Kopete.

I really like(d) this application and am very eager to use it again. I've also spend hours browing the internet for a solution, and although I couldn't find, I did find a lot of people with the same problem.

I'm eager to fix this thing! If someone could only tell me what to do, I'd be more than willing to spend time and energy on it. I have no programming knowledge, but I consider myself to be a fairly experienced and knowledgeable user with good learning capabilities.

Please help!

Hello from the KDE Bugsquad!

Unfortunately, Yahoo has discontinued the Yahoo Messenger service, and the code has been removed from Kopete.

Thus, I am closing this bug as "UNMAINTAINED" since it will no longer be fixable, or able to operate due to Yahoo.
