Description Maciej Pilichowski 2009-07-13 18:19:04 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.90)

Probably some omission, currently items of the toolbar are scattered all over it -- two buttons on the left, search edit box on the right, with hires screen it is easy to miss it.

Also add search history (like [Search <Xv])
and hover tooltips like amarok
and backgroundcolor match=green/nomatch=red.

Thx,
Ralph

And prevent Search box to get focus after systemsettings start!
Comment 3 Ben Cooksley 2009-07-14 02:55:58 UTC
I have been unable to trace the reason why the searchbox gets focus on startup. No matter what I try the box always steals focus.
Comment 4 Ben Cooksley 2009-07-14 04:45:41 UTC
Found the problem now... remarkably simple. The search box will no longer steal focus from svn commit 996216.

A search suggestions list, made up of the names of modules and their keywords is available in Trunk.

The moving of the search box to the left is not going to be occurring however, as it is more commonly found on the right side ( see Dolphin, Finder, Konqueror, Any web browser including Firefox, Opera, etc )

Ben, I am reopening this one, because clearly we don't understand each other.

Current situation:
[icon][icon] [search ]

My wish is

[icon][icon][search ]

You would be stroke how odd current UI is with bigger resolution -- I guess with something like 1280x800 they seems to align as shown above.

Comparison to other programs:
* any other program uses space efficiently (as shown at the 2nd "screenshot"). * (just for the record!) kate, okular, monodevelop, and I could find probably more, places search on left
* any other program didn't put search on the right "just like that", but it was side effect of lot of widgets
* scattering widgets in corners and leaving middle space wasted is bad from a11y POV and u7y as well, because user has to make excessive mouse movements without any benefit

Note that the original idea for placing it hard on the right was drawn from here: http://www.suse.de/~dmacvicar/screenshots/osx-preferences/leopard-preview-prefs-24.png

Note also that System Settings displays on 1280x800 screens ( which is what I use ) exactly how it is on the first option ( ie. with a visible gap )
Comment 8 Maciej Pilichowski 2009-09-10 11:52:23 UTC
This would mean that mimicing other UI is not always good. I guess they put it on the right because MacOSX (desktop) has the spotlight on the right. The screenshot on my monitor looks nice, but systemsettings window (maximized) not -- Apple "solved" this by not letting user to maximize the ss dialog.

Removed Junior Job tag from bug name.
Comment 10 Christoph Feck 2009-12-02 13:45:44 UTC
Ben, I am agreeing with Maciej here.
Comment 11 Nate Graham 2023-08-09 18:06:32 UTC
Icons view is being removed for Plasma 6, so this bug will be no longer possible to experience there. :)
