The idea is the following:
provide a way to reach the reply from the replied message and viceversa, so that's easy to follow a thread. The "group messages by thread" feature is helpless if messages are in different folder (e.g.: inbox, sent).

The same concept could be applied to forwarded message and in general to all messages that are in some way related.

Maybe using Nepomuk could help?
