Description John Wheaton 2009-07-08 00:44:17 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Okular: 0.8.2
KDE: 4.2.2
Kubuntu: 9.04 64 bit

I configured a printer through "Printer Configuration" so I could print through OpenOffice. I then could not print through Okular (admittedly, I did not try before). I installed ePDF and it printed just fine.

I found this in my /var/log/cups/error_log:

E [07/Jul/2009:06:28:35 -0400] Syntax error on line 11 of printers.conf.
E [07/Jul/2009:06:49:11 -0400] Syntax error on line 11 of printers.conf.

E [07/Jul/2009:18:34:44 -0400] CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer: Unauthorized

I will append my printers.conf once I file this.

Can you print from other KDE4 programs, such as KWrite? I assume OpenOffice and Firefox print OK?
Comment 3 John Wheaton 2009-07-08 19:46:07 UTC
I am not able to print from Kate either. I do not have Kwrite installed; I assume a test from Kate qualifies?
Comment 4 John Layt 2009-07-09 01:14:10 UTC
OK, that confirms it as probably a Qt bug rather than an Okular bug. Can you just confirm that OpenOffice or Firefox does print OK to the same printer? Can you also confirm what version of CUPS you have? Can you confirm what time the print job was subbed at, that it was the same time as the 'Syntax error' and not the same time as the 'Convert File' error? Could you possibly delete the printer from CUPS and use the CUPS web interface to add it again and see if that works? I just want to rule out that it is a problem with the admin module and is a problem with Qt.

Thanks!

I am now able to print.

AT FIRST my Qt applications could see my network printer. I never tried printing because I figured if they could see it, they could print to it. The key application I need/want to print from is OpenOffice. When I tried printing from OpenOffice it showed only "Generic Printer". So I did some searching and found these instructions: http://tboxmy.blogspot.com/2009/04/setting-up-printer-for-kubuntu.html. I'll repeat them here on the off-chance that blog isn't available:

---
The KDE system on Kubuntu uses network discovery to find the available printers. This means, users do not need to manually add printers. This is done in 2 steps.

Step 1:
At the KMenu choose Applications ->System ->Printer Configuration.

Step 2:
Choose Server settings and check the "Show printers shared by other systems". Press "Apply".

Users need to wait for about a min for the first time discovery of the printers. Press Ok and test the printings.
---

That let me setup my printer and use it from OpenOffice. But I could not print to that from ANY Qt apps.

THIS MORNING I went to "Printer Configuration" and decided to try the "New Printer" approach. That worked. I how have "HP-7200" *and* "HP_7200" listed and they both work. I then removed "HP_7200" and "HP-7200" still works from Qt and GTK apps.

I'm willing to tinker, so if there is anything you want me to go back and retry/retest, let me know.

As for your questions...
- The Syntax Error was *not* at the same time I submitted the document to print.
- I will list all of my *cups* packages below.
- I have it working. I can try the cups web interface if you would like -- I'll need to look that up as it is outside of my current knowledge/experience.

This bug report is quite old.

@John Wheaton:
Do you still encounter the described problem with current versions of Okular?

I'm setting the bug status to NEEDSINFO for now, since the question has not been answered yet.

This is no longer an issue for me due to a complete OS change. Thanks! Apologies for not replying to the JAN email. I did not see it.

I'd update the status, but I'm not sure what it would be set to.

Cheers!

No problem, thanks for your quick reply now! I think we can close this bug report as "WORKSFORME" in this case, which I'm doing hereby.

Should you switch your OS again in the future, please feel free to file a new bug report in case you're still having any issues with this.
