if this locks up completely your desktop (not being able to move the mouse is probably an X-Server/graphics card driver problem) is nothing we can fix with kmail. Try changing your X11 driver to "vesa" or some other non-proprietary driver. Also, it might be helpful to know on which specific file you were hovering with the mouse when the hang appeared. Test also with other applications, be they KDE or non KDE. If you are still sure that it's only a problem within kmail, please reopen this issue.
