The OSD is essentially a notification area, and I would like all notifications to appear in Plasma's notification area. It would be nice if Amarok would (at least optionally) display track changes as a passive popup instead of displaying a custom OSD.

I just found out that there's a plugin which does exactly what you want:

only downside I can see so far is that it needs python

This is already implemented in git master. Look out for 2.2.1 :)
