What I was doing when the application crashed:
After selection of an application from the task bar, plasma crashed in the way of being unresponsive and not showing any icons / application names anymore on the task bar. All other plasmoids would not show anything anymore either. I could still use the K-menu, ALT+F2 to start applications and ALT+TAB to switch. The task bar also allowed the selection of ungrouped applications. Grouped ones could not be selected.

This stated continued for a long time (I had similar problems with KDE 4.2.2, but I would always kill plasma and restart it manually, which did not work anymore since the binary is missing). 

After a long time, I decided to click several times left and right-clicks on the desktop wallpaper (running globe wallpaper with openstreetmap) as well as another plasmoid running on the desktop. After a few clicks, the plasma-desktop crash notification came up, and plasma-desktop restarted.
