Description Dotan Cohen 2009-06-13 19:58:57 UTC
Version:            (using KDE 4.2.90)
Installed from:    Ubuntu Packages

KDE 4 without composting has absolutely no windowing (minimize, maximize, close) effects. Windows just appear and disappear in a very jarring manner. Please add simple windowing effects for the non-composting users. Thanks.

Note that KDE 3 did have simple windowing effects.

this is a matter for kwin, not plasma, but anyways...

the decision was made early in kde4 to not "cheat" on pretty effects: either they would be done with composite, or not at all. I expect this will be closed WONTFIX.

i quite agree with Dotan here. so basically, we either use compositing, or don't use KDE at all? there are *many* users around the world who can't use compositing, would still love to use KDE4, and would still want to have a decent looking desktop in front of them. we're not asking for fancy stuff to be done with no compositing, just simple animations, not even sure we can call them animations. i mean OSes as old as windows 98 used to do simple minimize/restore animations on computers with 8 mb graphics, as long as it doesn't look so ugly to repel users. I'll be honest, sometimes i want to disable compositing to boost performance a bit, but i get annoyed right away but how repulsive to the eye it is to work with windows.
thanks in advance.

Please stop spreading FUD. KDE is perfectly usable without _any_ compositing, in fact I'm doing exactly that every day about 10-12 hours (partly with KDE3, partly with KDE4). Animations for minimizing windows don't add any value to the operation itself.

Luckily those people can use KDE4, because compositing effects are not mandatory.

I'd say that even without any compositing and/or transparency a KDE4 desktop looks very decent.

Hmm, I can't remember my Win98 to do any kind of animation, but its been quite a long time since then. I know for sure my Windows XP installation had no such effects on by default.

Well, there's a _very_ easy way to get animations without compositing: Use another windowmanager than kwin with KDE4. Or if you really need kwin then find someone who forks kwin and implements the necessary bits and pieces.

Note: I'm no kwin developer, so this opinion might or might not match with that of the kwin developers.

Not worth while and more difficult to do than you think it is.

@Andreas:
I think it's rather bold and out of place for you to tell another user to go fork kwin to get the feature that he wants, when you are not a kwin developer. Likewise telling him to go find another window manager is a bit out of line. Express your opinion, but do not make policy for the kwin devs.

@Lucas:
I do appreciate how difficult the work is, and I do appreciate how much effort is put into kwin already. I respect your decision, even if I don't agree with it. Thanks.
