Description Dotan Cohen 2009-06-13 19:54:17 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.90)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

It seems that Dolphin is somewhat slow to select files with the rubberband. I have noticed this in both Icon and Detailed view.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Enter directory with many files
2) Place mouse cursor in corner of Dolphin main window
3) Press left mouse button, drag rubberband to diagonally opposite corner

What happens:
All the files are selected, but it takes about half a second to select them

What I expected to happen:
I expected all the files to be selected instantaneously, as in KDE 3, Windows Explorer, and Nautilus.

- Does it make a difference uf you turn off the Information Panel?
- Do you have a Nvidia graphics card?
Thanks!

i have a very decent, even powerful, computer, but i can't help but notice how dolphin acts as if struggling to do what i ordered it to do, CPU consumption is not high at all, memory is very relaxed, dolphin in fact is NOT struggling at all, but for the eye, it looks as if it is. the dragging is slow, when selecting few files, it waits a split second to mark them selected, maybe it's waiting to see if i'll change the selection or reconsider, i don't know, but this split second wasn't there in KDE3.

I cannot reproduce this behavior on my system :-( Could you please do mea favour and check the following:
- Does switching to another widget style instead of Oxygen help?

To check whether it is Dolphin related at all:
- Please open the "file open" dialog (e.g. by using KWrite)
- Assure to increase the size of the window so that it is as big as your Dolphin window.
- Increase the icon size like in Dolphin.

If it is still slow, then this issue is not Dolphin specific and we must fo further checks... Thanks in advance!

Kubuntu Jaunty - 64bit
KDE 4.2.x
Nvidia card using nvidia-glx-180
Theme: Oxygen default install

I cannot reproduce it *unless* there is a side-panel showing previews. Then there is a noteable pause as the panel tries to start a preview for items on the leading edge of the rubber-band.

I tried the Kate -> Open dialogue thing. I tried Dolphin. I tried various layouts and icon sizes.

Wow, it is even slower in the file chooser dialogue! I can see the rubberband try to catch the mouse pointer. Changing the icon size has no effect on the rubberband speed.

Thanks for the feedback! I've currently no access to my PC (I wrote the recent replies with my iphone as you can see by the typos ;-)), but beside the Information Panel slowdown it seems to related to the combination Qt and graphics driver. I did some profiling for selections a few months ago and there was no CPU related bottleneck. But I'll do further checks when I've access to my PC again (~ 1 week)

In KDE 4.6 I can no longer reproduce this issue. Even with the Information panel showing, rubber band selection works fine. Can anyone else reproduce? If not, I'll close the issue.

Thanks.
