Description Dotan Cohen 2009-06-12 17:15:52 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.90)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

In many places in KDE (Bugzilla's "Component" selector, desktop context menu) Plasmoids are incorrectly called widgets. For consistency's sake, please correct them all to read "plasmoid". Thanks.

Technically, Plasma calls them "Applets". But since "Widgets" is an established word, it is used in the user visible space.

A "Plasmoid" is actually the package that you download. It may contain applets, images, translations, scripts, dataengines, etc.

I am adding Plasma devs to CC to discuss the issue.

I seem to remember the Plasma developers agreed on "widgets" as general naming, while "plasmoid" being more unofficial (and limited to the "native" widgets).

the term "Plasmoid" is never to be shown in the user interface, just as Plasma or Containment is never to be shown aside from Plasma as a proper noun refering to the application.

they are always referred to as Widgets because:

* "widgets" has a defined meaning whereas Plasmoid is is jargon

* we support more than just Plasmoids: we also support Google Gadgets, Superkaramba widgets, MacOS X Dashboard widgets, E17 Edje content, etc..

I see, thanks. I did not realize that. Going through the desktop, I can find the word "plasmoid" in several places, all related to the KDE-look.org integration. I will mention is to the KDE-look.org maintainers.

Thanks!
