Description Andreas Pietzowski 2009-06-11 17:11:13 UTC
Version: unknown (using 4.2.90 (KDE 4.2.90 (KDE 4.3 Beta2)), Kubuntu packages)
Compiler: cc
OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.28-11-generic

I installed KDE 4.3 beta 2 but my second screen with the Twinview setup shows no background. It is black and the context menu is also not possible.
Comment 1 Andreas Pietzowski 2009-06-11 17:28:47 UTC
I also recognized that the upper-right plasma-menu isn't present at my second screen. If I lock the widgets on the left screen, also the panel on my right screen is locked. Seems like they are coupled together. In KDE 4.2 every screen had it's own context menu and so on. Seems like Twinview is somehow broken in KDE 4.3 beta2. Would be nice if this gets fixed until the release date.
Comment 2 Andreas Pietzowski 2009-06-11 17:57:59 UTC
Additional information:
I recognized an area in the upper left corner of my second desktop where the context menu works. I can configure my wallpaper there but then the wallpaper is only visible in the upper left area of this screen. The rest of the second screen is black an not context-clickable.
Comment 3 Aaron J. Seigo 2009-06-12 02:21:19 UTC
"If I lock the widgets on the left screen, also the panel on my right
screen is locked."

it's always been that way; can you post the output to terminal when you do this from a konsole window:

kquitapp plasma-desktop
plasma-desktop

I can confirm that something broke between 4.2 and 4.3.

I use cloned displays (laptop + monitor). The monitor has higher res than the laptop.

In the old days, KDE seemed aware of the new desktop size whenever I switched monitors.
The desktop was filled with the background and the panel moved to the edge of the biggest displayed.
Now this is broken.

A restart of plasma fixes it.

Screenshot with Twinview and right screen has no plasma visible.

The black area is not clickable and no widgets can be dropped there.
Comment 7 Andreas Pietzowski 2009-06-12 14:06:09 UTC
A restart of plasma doesn't fix the problem in my case. Both screens are identical belonging resolution and general setup. I attached a screenshot from my desktop. The left part is perfect, The right part shows the black area which draws everything black and doesn't response to right-clicks. You can only us the right click in the upper blue area where the background image is displayed.
Comment 8 Aaron J. Seigo 2009-06-12 17:35:19 UTC
in the screenshot, the second containment can be seen, but it's misplaced. unfortunately, the console output pasted contains nothing from plasma, which probably means that the debug packages for kdebase-workspace have not been installed. that output would be very useful for figuring out what's going on.

attaching your plasma-desktoprc and plasma-desktop-appletsrc files might also be useful.

My plasma-desktop-appletsrc
Comment 11 Andreas Pietzowski 2009-06-12 17:46:50 UTC
That was a great idea. When I remove the file plasma-desktop-appletsrc then my second screen works again without a problem. So the bug should be inside this file. I upgraded from 4.2.4 to 4.3 beta2 an this update seemed to kill my config-file.

It is an easy solution for me to regenerate my desktop but maybe there is some bug in the config-update within KDE-upgrade.

Screenshot after connecting higher res display.

Is this the same bug ?
Comment 13 Stefan Borggraefe 2009-07-23 21:44:20 UTC
I had this issue two times with KDE 4.3 RC1 and KDE 4.3 RC 2 and Kubuntu 9.04. One time I reached this state after the whole desktop turned extremely slow because of X.org and plasma-desktop hammering the CPU. I then barely managed to logout and after the logging in again my twinview plasma setup was like on the screenshot in comment 6.

The second time this occured was after upgrading from RC1 to RC2 (KDM was restarted during the upgrade process because of a bug in the current Kubuntu packges).

I think this is a major bug since this is a major loss of function and many users will not be able to recover their plasma desktop after this happened. Also if you fix this by removing the broken plasma-desktoprc you will have to reconfigure your entire desktop again.
Comment 14 Andreas Ntaflos 2009-07-26 01:52:39 UTC
Just a "me too" here, just having upgraded to KDE 4.3 RC3 from KDE 4.2.4 on Kubuntu 9.04. A screenshot can be found here <https://daff.pseudoterminal.org/misc/desktop_kde43rc3.png> if needed (doubt it).

Attaching plasma-desktop-appletsrc-orig as requested in #kde.

Broken after upgrading from KDE 4.3 RC2 to KDE 4.3 RC3

This was my plasma-desktop-appletsrc while the bug was showing after upgrading from KDE 4.3 RC2 to KDE 4.3 RC3. I moved it away and the bug wasn't showing anymore, but I had to reconfigure my Desktop then.
Comment 17 Stefan Borggraefe 2009-07-30 09:08:29 UTC
This just happened to me again mit KDE 4.3 RC3 Kubuntu 9.04 packages. This time it wasn't after upgrading to a new KDE release, but just after a normal logout/login.
Comment 18 Jaakko Kantojärvi 2009-08-10 16:52:12 UTC
This happens also with randr side-by-side with one rotated monitor.
Comment 19 Daniele Bagaglini 2009-08-12 03:11:43 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.0)
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs

This is my system:
CORE2 DUO E8400 3GHz
P5K3 Deluxe FSB 1600
4GB RAM DDR3 1333
Nvidia GeForce 8800GT 1024 DDR3 PCI-Express : nvidia display driver version
185.18.31

Enabling TwinView, with active composite:
http://digidownload.libero.it/purple_rain77/archivio/kde4/twin_with_composite.mp4
Both screens have the same mistake.

Enabling TwinView without composite:
http://digidownload.libero.it/purple_rain77/archivio/kde4/twin_no_composite.mp4
All works properly on first and second monitor.
In this case, I can enable desktop effects in a second moment without problem.
Comment 20 Andreas Pietzowski 2010-03-21 11:00:48 UTC
Not existsing anymore since 4.4
