Description m.wege 2009-06-09 17:39:24 UTC
Version: 1.2.80 (using 4.2.90 (KDE 4.2.90 (KDE 4.3 Beta2)), Kubuntu packages)
Compiler: cc
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.30-020630rc6-generic

I have dolphin all the time in "edit" mode. What miss is the possibility to go up in the folder hierachy with one click on an "arrow up" like it was in konqueror. I know this is possible when i switch to navigate, but still it would be just better to be able to do this directly.

You can add the "Up" action to the toolbar using "Settings->Configure Toolbars...", maybe that's what you mean ;-)
Comment 2 m.wege 2009-06-09 20:29:37 UTC
Nearly. Having the function at all is good. But it seems like the "toolbar" where you can edit the location can not be edited. The best place would be to have it there, then in both windows (I always have split view on). So if there is any chance to make the toolbars editable or to add the functionality there this would be fine.

I've tried this kind of approach already (see http://ppenz.blogspot.com/2008/07/url-navigator-improvements.html), but after some discussions we dropped it again.

However I've marked this item as wish, so that voting is possible.
Comment 4 m.wege 2009-06-09 21:07:41 UTC
Hey Peter, but just to make it clear: I would like to have this go-up in the editable mode. It would not be necessary to have it as an arrow. It could also be implemented like this.

1. You are in the edit-field
2. Press cursor up or down
3. List appears
/home/we/are/here/now/and/we
/home/we/are/here/now/and/
/home/we/are/here/now/
/home/we/are/here/
/home/we/are/
/home/we/
/home/
/
4. You can go up and down with the cursor and choose with enter or start to edit.
This would be conform with the existing editing policies.

Thanks for clarification - yes, this sounds very reasonable.

Hi Peter, any chances the wish described in comment no 4. could make it into KDE 4.4?
Comment 7 Peter Penz 2009-11-15 14:50:18 UTC
Sorry, I did not have the time to implement this for KDE 4.4. Because of the discussions in comment #3 I'm also unsure whether this wish should be implemented at all. From the reports I get there seem to be 2 major group of users:
1. The breadcrumb users. They switch only to the edit mode doing some editing.
2. The editable mode users. They never use the breadcrumb mode and have their "Go Up" button in the toolbar.

Implementing this wish would make it necessary to make yet another option for removing the "Go Up" button in the editable mode, so that "group 2" cannot claim about a "redundant button" below the toolbar :-/ Really a tricky topic...
Comment 8 m.wege 2009-11-15 15:05:41 UTC
Hmm, I am bit confused. I think my wish would be more than the arrow in the toolbar. It would extend the navigation options for "Edit" users very much. The arrow only allows up. If you would allow navigating via cursor, you would allow to go down, by showing all available directories. I believe that is the way it worked in Konqui before. About the arrow: People who use that edit mode should be able to remove the arrow themselves. :-)
Comment 9 m.wege 2010-03-21 13:10:47 UTC
Hi Peter, any chance the now in comment#4 defined wish could be implemented? I think it does not affect the discusion you reference in comment#3 and as I recall this is something existed before when konqui was filemanager.
For the arrow up thing, I have another idea, which I will file in a separate bug.
Comment 10 Peter Penz 2010-03-21 20:14:03 UTC
I like the suggestion from comment #4 and if anyone will submit a patch, I'd be open to integrate it. However I'm currently busy with other topics and cannot promise anything... The problem is that the approach above is non-trivial, as it affects a kdelibs class -> it takes quite a lot of time to implement it and most probably only very few people will ever recognize this feature at all :-(

This was moved to Gitlab and then closed, removing Assigned tag.
