Version: (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

Devs,

When working with kmail in threaded mode, if the threads are collapsed, you get no indication in the message list that there are unread messages in the collapsed thread :-( My sort and aggregation are:

Message Sort Order:

By Date/Time of Most Recent in Subtree

Aggregation:

        Standard Mailing List

There should some indication, either by bold, by color or by thread icon, that the collapsed thread indeed has unread messages so you do not have to "expand all threads" and hunt up and down the list to find the threads with unread messages.

View unread is not an option either as it defeats the purpose of being able to view messages/replies in their proper context within the thread.

The "Standard Mailing List" aggregation should automatically expand all the thread parts that contain any new/unread/important message.

The plus key will bring you to the next unread message in the folder and it will expand its thread if necessary.

The count of unread/new children in a subtree is shown in the tooltip that appears when you hover the mouse on any message item.

The implementation of the additional indication you're suggesting would have a significant overhead in the view load process as it would require propagating the counts of unread messages "up the tree". Performance is a critical issue in the message view and thus this feature will require a very large user interest in order to be implemented.

Szymon,

Those are all good features, but can't we just have a different color for collapsed threads that contain unread messages. I have always just used Thunderbird, but for KDE4, I committed myself to use kmail (kontact, etc..) and I really like what I see. Currently one of the biggest difficulties for someone, like me, who is moving from Thunderbird to kmail is finding the unread messages.

Yes, keyboard shortcuts, the "+" key, etc.. are all smart features, but for a new user, it takes time to learn the "secret handshakes" and simply being able to visually see if you have new messages by the collapsed thread being in a different color would really help ease the transition.

I don't know if just the simple color change will needs that much additional overhead but, even if it does, it is worth finding out just what it would take to implement. It would really make kmail that much easier to use for new users.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
