Description Nuno Silva 2009-06-05 00:38:42 UTC
Version: 2.2.3 (using KDE 4.2.4)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

In earlier versions of konsole you can select text with the left mouse botton. This still works. In earlier version you could have the SHIFT key pressed while doing this. In konsole 2.2.3 from KDE 4.2.4 (kubuntu packages for 64bit jaunty) this doesn't work anymore.

Why is this important? Because selecting text in applications that support the mouse inside "TERM=xterm" terminals (like midnight commander) is now impossible. Before you could just press SHIFT and select away.

Even with only bash and simple text, now it's impossible to do ctrl-shift-alt and left mouse "rectangular selections" (for selecting from position 1,1 to 2,2 without selecting all of row 1).

I use(d) this features every day and they are some of the things that make konsole the best terminal emulator there is! Needless to say, I updated today from kde 4.2.2 to 4.2.4 and I'm thinking about 4.2.2 again just because of this.

If you need more input or anything at all don't think twice, just ask.

Regards,
Nuno

More info:
One symptom is that while shift is pressed the mouse pointer blinks very fast. As if shift is activating the "hide-cursor when typing" feature.

I also tried to install my previous konsole version (konsole_4.2.2-0ubuntu4_amd64.deb) and after logout, ldconfig, login, I still can't use the shift or ctrl-alt-shift to select with the mouse. Maybe this problem as introduced in another package (kdelibs?).

Regards,
Nuno

Hello - I had another report of this recently but I have not been able to reproduce the bug using the same settings using a trunk build of Konsole and the version that ships with Ubuntu Jaunty (which I believe is 4.2.2 - the same version I think that the other reporter was using). Where did you install 4.2.4 from?
Comment 3 Robert Knight 2009-06-05 11:00:57 UTC
I do not know if this only affects certain Ubuntu users or others - relevant Ubuntu report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase-kde4/+bug/382162

KDE was updated two days ago from vanilla KDE in Kubuntu Jaunty by adding this repo:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

It's advertised here: http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2.4

I'd like to stress that in Jaunty's vanilla KDE it works fine.

I couldn't reproduce by replacing my local version of Konsole (binary + libraries) with the one from that package.

Could you try backing up and removing:

~/.kde/share/config/konsolerc
~/.kde/share/apps/konsole

(Might be ~/.kde4 - I'm not sure which Kubuntu defaults to)
Comment 6 Nuno Silva 2009-06-06 01:14:02 UTC
It's ~/.kde/
As I said earlier I installed the vanilla (original) Kubuntu konsole and it doesn't work.

Anyway, I have more details. Yesterday I created a new user just to test this. Yesterday I wouldn't work with new konsole or old. TODAY it _works_ in this new user with newer konsole!!! Nothing was installed, removed or configured. The only difference is that yesterday I closed my kdm and logged in with the new user. Today I left my normal user logged in and used fast-user-switching to start a new KDE in tty8.

Anyway, it's working for this new user now! I can't figure it out.

Right now I can't logout. I'll do more tests ASAIK and report back.
Thanks!

Hello. I'm back.
Just to say that after rebooting the box I can now select text as usual.

Please note:
- Log out and then log in again did not solve this issue;
- Creating a totally new user and logging in had the same problems but after a few hours it started working without any modifications (?)
- After rebooting it started working, again without any modification.

Wierd but true...

I think this can be closed. Maybe it's some glitch in this box. If it happens again I'll bug you again ;-)

Regards,
Nuno

I'm also having this problem on archlinux x86_64, kdemod 4.3.1. So I think this is not resolved, and not limited to Ubuntu packages.
I'm using Vim, and as a quick and dirty workaround I have defined a key to toggle mouse support in Vim, exactly as explained in http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Managing_set_options

Hey I've got more input on this problem...
I happened to try "konsole -graphicssystem raster" because vim was a bit slow in konsole... (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172250) -- it was not very slow, but just a bit annoying when scrolling line by line continuously
It did solve the slowness, but also the mouse selection problem !
I've experienced those 2 problems (mouse selection and slowness) with bitmap fonts, with 2 difference ati graphics cards (ATI radeon X300 and ATI HD 4670), resp. with drivers xf86-video-ati and fglrx.

Hum forget what I said, I tried again without "konsole -graphicssystem raster" and noticed that the mouse selection problem was solved already... Possibly due to the fact that I changed the graphics card and drivers!
So, these 2 problems seem unrelated... Sorry :)
