Description Roman K. 2009-06-04 15:03:36 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

Hi,

my collection is divided into two parts:
The first part is a directory on my internal harddrive. There I have songs I listen to often.
The other part is a directory on my external harddrive. This is the bigger part.

Now when I am not at home (where my external harddrive is), I cannot listen to the music on my external harddrive. But the collection shows all these songs, even if those are not available.

So what my wish is: it would be cool to have multiple collections, and if amarok can see my external hdd, the "external collection" is shown, when it is not attached, it is not shown (or shown disabled or something like this, that one knows that it still exists).
I hope it's clear what I mean.

I like this feature request!!

I'd even like to go further:
Imagine you have different folders, with different music collections (jazz, classic, pop-rock) or just as roman k. a collection with "actual" and "backup" music.. it would be very nice to be able choose, that a certain folder is showed as a local collection in the context view and even give it a name.
So we would see somehting like:
LOCAL COLLECTIONS:
- Jazz
- Rock
- External (Classic)
IPOD
.
.
Of course, the detection/showing argument is quite important too

People, say what you think
And thanks to the devs for all the work!

Collection filtred by genre

Michael, see my screenshot, isn't this what you want? Then you can simply filter your collection by genre, providing you have tagged all your tracks correctly.

Of course, you can also use the "Files" tab, so you can see your folders

Hi Miriam.

Well, kind of, but it is not a solution if you have removable hard-disk, like roman k. does. And i was just making an example with the Genres. Maybe I would like to call my collections: "Main Collection", "Party Collection", "Romantic Collection", "My Brothers Collection" ;) See my point?

But thanks for your effort (in my case, i have all the jazz on a external hd, so its not convenient to manage it with amarok....)

Well, that's what playlist are there for, and you can use custom genres. Not sure your use cases are really convincing...
Comment 6 Michael S 2009-06-19 19:14:05 UTC
well, its just an extension (easy to implement!) to romans proposition of multiple collections.. i mean somehow you would have to distinguish them. I know it's not an absolute necessity, but one little feature (optional possibility) more that distinguishes amarok from other music players.

and no, its not at all about playlists.... and genres you have to tag yourself, which the minority of the poeple really does..

my original idea was, that you have multiple collections per device (or folder), and only show these collections if amarok can access these (or, as i said before show the unaccessible collections deactivated with a hint why they are deactivated).

the advantage of this is, for example, that i don't add songs to my playlist by mistake which i currently cannot listen to because they are on a device that is not connected to my laptop.

another case could be when you have a part of your music on a network-share and you aren't connected to this network. then it's also useful to show this collection disabled so that you don't add them by mistake.

i think the idea of michael s. is just to give these multiple collections names to distinguish between those. so that you don't have collection1, collection2, collection3 but "Extenal HDD Collection <name of hdd>", "local collection", "network collection <name of network>"

Take a look at comment #3 of bug 197573, I think this is a very nice idea...

Why not merge the reports then. There's not much use to have two wishes for the same feature.
