Did it changed to black when you were using Kopete from KDE rc1 or later? The "reset color & font" button in chat window should fix it
Yes, the "reset color & font" button fixed it for me (downstream report).
KDE 4.3 is out now. Is this still a problem?

I've not had this happen to me again, so closing as fixed seems appropriate. However, something similar happened just now with the Microblogging widget in KDE 4.4RC2: Bug 224216

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained. Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
