Description albert 2009-05-21 18:40:19 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.85)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

I use kde 4.3 beta for kubuntu 9.04 on my Asus EeePc 1000H.
In the systemtray there are the icons of the following applications: kmix, skype, klipper, amarok, knotes, kopete and kwallet (this is hidden).
If I switch off the screen (Fn + F7) and then I restore it, the systemtray shows just two icons: kmix and kwallet (still hidden). Even the "Auto Hide" panel of the "Systemtray Settings" lists only those two icons.
The other applications are still running in background and they reappear in the systemtray if I remove that widget and insert a new one.
Thanks for your great work...

kmix and kwallet uses the new protocol, that means it's a proble with the fdo ones that could be either:
-graphics driver bug
-problem in the FDOtaskProtocol in the applet
-problem in ksystemtryIcon
-problem in QSystemtrayIcon

soo maybe upstream?
opinions?

obviously more than just "switching off the screen" is happening here; perhaps a suspend/resume is happening?

anyways, what's almost certainly happening here is that the selection for "i am the system tray" is for whatever reason getting re-set (_NET_SYSTEM_TRAY_* atoms, most likely) and so the tray loses the icons.

perhaps the tray needs to re-aquire those post-resume (assuming that's what's happening, clarification from the reporter would be most appreciated), in which case we need to be notified of resume. but it really sounds very fishy all-in-all as i would not expect such things as the selection ownership to change in that case, and would really chalk this up to a Yet Another Poor x.org behaviour.

No, that happened just switching off the screen with the key combination "Fn + F7".
I'd like to see if that issue still affects my system, in the mean time I upgraded to kubuntu karmic koala, but now the above key combination doesn't work anymore and I don't know how I can trigger that action.
In the next days I will investigate...

"that happened just switching off the screen with the key combination "Fn +
F7"."

let me just reiterate, then: it is not possible for this to happen just because the LCD was powered down. that has no impact on these things. something more must have been happening on the system when Fn+F7 was pressed.

- Did you experience this again recently with an updated KDE SC ?

In my actual system (Kubuntu Karmic + KDE SC 4.4 RC) the combination "Fn + F7" doesn't work, so I can't give you an answer. I'm sorry... :(
