Description Caleb Cushing 2009-05-16 13:56:34 UTC
Version: 2.1 beta 2 (using KDE 4.2.3)
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package

you used to be able to right click a track (and I believe even an album and maybe more) by right clicking in the collection browser. this is no longer available. I personally find it very user unfriendly. many users complained when queue went away in 2.0. I know this is still available from playlist and from some center panel functions. but it is way less useful to me there. since this change was intentional I doubt it will be changed back but I'm reporting this in hopes that it will be.
Comment 1 Seb Ruiz 2009-05-16 23:58:06 UTC
This was an intentional change made by the team after the usability study revealed some 'interesting' results. Personally, I call bullshit on the fact that a user cannot distinguish between "append", "replace" and "queue" in playlist.

Personally, I'd like the functionality back too - since I used it all the time.
Comment 2 Caleb Cushing 2009-05-17 00:10:25 UTC
personally I'd rather have queue than append... but the usability study is BS. alienating your experienced long term users is not a good idea. if it confuses a few new users slightly... that's fine... but I doubt it confused them so much that it validates making my life harder. Hell, if you don't want it always enabled then lets create an expert mode...
Comment 3 Seb Ruiz 2009-05-17 08:44:47 UTC
@Caleb: don't take this personally - but just keep in mind that you are no more qualified to make assessments about usability of a product based solely on your use case habits.
Comment 4 Caleb Cushing 2009-05-17 09:49:38 UTC
you know what? you're right. I just realized 6 people besides me who cared about this feature... you me, and 1 person cc-ed to this bug and the 4 on bug 171939 (who might be fine with this functionality) cc-ed to that one. that's really not enough to make this worth bringing back.
Comment 5 Seb Ruiz 2009-05-17 10:26:25 UTC
Keep in mind that this feature removal hasn't gone public yet, and that I am a core Amarok developer.
Comment 6 Dan Leinir Turthra Jensen 2009-05-17 10:46:14 UTC
Keep in mind, also, that i did not add myself, but was added by Lydia because she thought it might be interesting to me. So, nice jumping to conclusions there ;)

I would just like to throw in my vote here too; find I am often having to do the double step of appending to the playlist, then scrolling down to the bottom to right-click again and queue. In fact, I honestly don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that 99% of the time I want to queue tracks from the collection rather than append - saved playlists I tend to append though, but I also frequently want to queue single tracks from saved playlists.

Really surprised that this was a concious decision - conceptually right clicking on a track should enable you to perform the same functions on it regardless of where it is - a track is just a track whether its in the collection, or in a previously saved playlist. Of course there could be a certain contextual basis for example something like "remove from playlist" or "remove from collection". The fact that you can queue other tracks from the album that the currently playing track is on, doesn't make sense then either as these tracks are essentially just in the collection too. (and now that I've pointed that out, please don't remove it to hahaha)

I miss this function, too.

Maybe it's possible to make the difference between queue und playlist clear by icons that are not too easy to mix up.

maybe instead of queue and append they should be labeled in simpler words.

like "play song next" "add to playlist"

Adds the queue option back to the collection browser right click menu.

I'm also interested in getting this functionality back (naturally, flying in the face of the usability study ;-). Here's a patch that does it, if anyone is interested.
Comment 13 Caleb Cushing 2009-10-02 18:31:59 UTC
*sigh* I was hoping to get this back in 2.2...
Comment 14 Mark Kretschmann 2009-10-03 10:18:10 UTC
FWIW, we've just merged a patch that adds entries from the collection to the playlist if you middle-click. It's not quite the same, but I find it very convenient :)

See here: BUG 197423
Comment 15 Myriam Schweingruber 2010-01-24 00:04:59 UTC
OK, moving this to the bugs list. If there is a Queue Track option in the Playlist, it should definitely also be in the Collection Browser, everything else doesn't make much sense.
Tycho, could you please make a merge request on http://gitorious.org/amarok/amarok ?

Any progress with this bug?
Comment 17 Myriam Schweingruber 2010-03-05 21:34:38 UTC
We are currently in feature freeze, so this has to wait.

Seems to be a wish.
Patches should go to reviewboard as Myriam indicated (where they can be properly commented on and reviewed)
